Arctic Monkeys - Crying Lightning

By Danielle Rowley - Posted on 03 August 2009

The long anticipated comeback has finally arrived. ‘Crying Lightning’ is the debut single from Arctic Monkeys third album, ‘Humbug’. The record was produced by Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and will be released in August – can’t wait! Although I wont have time to learn all the songs well enough before Leeds Festival!

In my opinion – and apparently a few others- the track is definitely a grower, so don’t expect to love it on first listen. However I now think its brilliant. The band have clearly matured and Josh Homme’s dark influence is apparent with eerie vocals, lyrics such as “And your past times, consisted of the strange, twisted and deranged” and an overall more serious and edgy sound. The track is allot more complex than their past songs, and further proves their musical abilities. The video is equally as dark and showcases the Arctics new style. I must admit, I wish Alex Turner would get a haircut! He’s looking very Carl Barat these days.

My conclusion – I am luuuving this track just now, however I can’t help missing the cheeky lyrics and catchy riffs, hopefully the fans will be able to appreciate this new sound/image. And who knows what the rest of ‘Humbug’ has to offer!
