Are disabled people in real life really like the way they are portrayed in the movies and books?
Lawrence Clark, a cerebral palsy sufferer in a wheelchair, asks this question and compares himself with various disabled characters from movies and books- oh and Heather Mills as well- by measuring himself against various criteria (eg: Evil, Pity, Asexual) ascribed to disabled people by the media and entertainment business. (eg: all megalomaniac Bond villains have to have some kind of disability)
Using Power Point, graphs, pie charts and videos Lawrence takes us on a journey of ‘normal’ peoples prejudices and fears and asks questions of us like why is it all ‘disabled’ characters who have won Oscars in movies are played by ‘normal’ actors?
He has a wicked sense of humour and mischief, this is shown to the fore on the videos of him on the streets of London trying to hail a cab and collecting money by sitting in his wheel chair and just shaking a bucket. This last bit was really funny as he goes from a sign that says Pay Off My Mortgage right up to a sign saying This Is A Scam and people still give money even after reading the sign!!
With a keen eye and mind for self-deprecation Laurence produces an hour of great comedy and sends you away asking questions about yourself and your prejudices in this funny, laugh out loud show.
Runs from 3-25 Aug (except 13 & 14)
